AMONG THOSE VARIABLES INCLUDED IN THE STUDY, PERSONAL AND BACKGROUND VARIABLES DEAL WITH SEX, MAJOR FIELD OF STUDY, AND THE LOCALE OF SCHOOL; WHEREAS ATTITUDINAL AND MOTIVATIONAL VARIABLES INCLUDE THE STUDENTS'' ATTITUDES TOWARD ENGLISH, THEIR ORIENTATION TOWARD THE LEARNING OF ENGLISH, AND THEIR MOTIVATIONAL INTENSITY IN MAKING USE OF ENGLISH. SIXTEEN HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-FOUR STUDENT AT THE THIRD-GRADE LEVEL SERVED AS SUBJECTS. THEY WERE TESTED BOTH ON THEIR EFL PROFICIENCY AS MEASURED BY A CLOZE TEST AND ON THE NATRUE OF THEIR ATTITUDES AND MOTIVATION TOWARD ENGLISH LEARNING. ALL THE INFORMATION NEEDED FOR THE STUDY WAS GAATHERED THROUGH MAILED QUESTIONNAIRES, THE CLOZE TEST WAS AFTERWARDS SCORED BY THE ACCEPTABLE-WORD METHOD WHICH ALLOWED BOTH EXACT WORDS AND ANY OTHER CONTEXTUALLY ACCEPTABLE RESPONSES, NAMELY, FILL-INS THAT VIOLATED NO CONTEXTUAL CONSTRAINTS. PEARSON PRODUCT-MONENT CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS WERE COMPUTED OFR ALL DATA COLLECTED. BRIEFLY STATED, THE PRESENT STUDY INTENDS TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONA:FIRSTLY,WHAT ARD THE VARIOUS SUBJECTS'' ATTITUDES AND MOTIVATION TOWARDS ENGLISH? SECONDLY, WILL THE SUBJECT''S EFL PROFICIENCY VARY WITH HIS PERSONAL AND BACKGROUND VARIABLES? THIRDLY, TO WHAT EXTENT DO THE SUBJECT''S ATTITUDES AND MOTIVATION VARY WITH HIS PERSONAL AND BACKGROUND VARIBALES? FOURTHLY ,HOW IS THE SUBJECT''S EFL PROFICIENCY RELATED TO HIS ATTITUDINAL AND MOTIVATIONAL VARIABLES? FITHLY, WHAT ARD THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG THE ATTITUDINAL AND MOTIVATIONAL VARIABLES? THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY SHOW THAT RELATIONSHIPS DO EXIST BETWEEN ATTEMPTED MEASURES OF ATTITUDES AND MOTIVATION, AND ATTAINMENT OF ENGLISH PROFICIENCY. STUDENTS WHO HANVE MORE FAVORABLE ATTITUDES TOWARD ENGLISH, MORE CONTACT WITH ENGLISH AT PRESENT,STRONGER DESIRE TO USE ENGLISH IN FUTURE, AND WOULD LIKE TO SPEND MORE EFFORT ON ENGLISH SHUDY TEND TO ACHIEVE A HIGHER DEGREE OF EJL PROFICIENCY. HOWEVER, THOSE WHO ARR MORE INTEGRATIVELY ORIENTED DO NOT NECESSARILY SCORE HIGHER ON THE CLOZE TEST AND NEITHER DO THOSE WHO ARE MORE INSTURMENTALLY ORIENTED. THUS, FORTHER RESEARCH IS RECOMMENTED ON THE RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY OF THE INSTRUMENTS USED TO ACQUIRE ATTITUDE IN FORMATION AND ON THE MEASURES OF LANGUAGE PROFICIENCV. --- 學位論文 ; thesis 0 en_US |

碩士 === 國立臺灣師範大學 === 外國語文研究所 === 74 === THE PRESENT STRDY INTENDS TO INVESTIGATE AMONG CHINESE SENIR HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENTS THEIR ATTITUDES AND MOTIVAT ON TOWARDS LEARNING ENGLISH AS A
FOREING LANGUAGE, AND TO DETERMINE HOW THEIR ATTAINED EFL PROFICIENCY AS
MEASURED BY THE CLOZE PROCEDURE IS RELATED TO A NUMBER OF VARIABLES WHICH
ARD BELIVED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR VARIANCE IN ENGLISH PROFICEENCY. AMONG
THOSE VARIABLES INCLUDED IN THE STUDY, PERSONAL AND BACKGROUND VARIABLES
DEAL WITH SEX, MAJOR FIELD OF STUDY, AND THE LOCALE OF SCHOOL; WHEREAS
ATTITUDINAL AND MOTIVATIONAL VARIABLES INCLUDE THE STUDENTS'' ATTITUDES
TOWARD ENGLISH, THEIR ORIENTATION TOWARD THE LEARNING OF ENGLISH, AND
THEIR MOTIVATIONAL INTENSITY IN MAKING USE OF ENGLISH.
SIXTEEN HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-FOUR STUDENT AT THE THIRD-GRADE LEVEL SERVED AS
SUBJECTS. THEY WERE TESTED BOTH ON THEIR EFL PROFICIENCY AS MEASURED BY A
CLOZE TEST AND ON THE NATRUE OF THEIR ATTITUDES AND MOTIVATION TOWARD
ENGLISH LEARNING. ALL THE INFORMATION NEEDED FOR THE STUDY WAS GAATHERED
THROUGH MAILED QUESTIONNAIRES, THE CLOZE TEST WAS AFTERWARDS SCORED BY THE
ACCEPTABLE-WORD METHOD WHICH ALLOWED BOTH EXACT WORDS AND ANY OTHER
CONTEXTUALLY ACCEPTABLE RESPONSES, NAMELY, FILL-INS THAT VIOLATED NO
CONTEXTUAL CONSTRAINTS. PEARSON PRODUCT-MONENT CORRELATION COEFFICIENTS
WERE COMPUTED OFR ALL DATA COLLECTED.
BRIEFLY STATED, THE PRESENT STUDY INTENDS TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING
QUESTIONA:FIRSTLY,WHAT ARD THE VARIOUS SUBJECTS'' ATTITUDES AND MOTIVATION
TOWARDS ENGLISH? SECONDLY, WILL THE SUBJECT''S EFL PROFICIENCY VARY WITH
HIS PERSONAL AND BACKGROUND VARIABLES? THIRDLY, TO WHAT EXTENT DO THE
SUBJECT''S ATTITUDES AND MOTIVATION VARY WITH HIS PERSONAL AND BACKGROUND
VARIBALES? FOURTHLY ,HOW IS THE SUBJECT''S EFL PROFICIENCY RELATED TO HIS
ATTITUDINAL AND MOTIVATIONAL VARIABLES? FITHLY, WHAT ARD THE RELATIONSHIPS
AMONG THE ATTITUDINAL AND MOTIVATIONAL VARIABLES?
THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY SHOW THAT RELATIONSHIPS DO EXIST BETWEEN
ATTEMPTED MEASURES OF ATTITUDES AND MOTIVATION, AND ATTAINMENT OF ENGLISH
PROFICIENCY. STUDENTS WHO HANVE MORE FAVORABLE ATTITUDES TOWARD ENGLISH,
MORE CONTACT WITH ENGLISH AT PRESENT,STRONGER DESIRE TO USE ENGLISH IN
FUTURE, AND WOULD LIKE TO SPEND MORE EFFORT ON ENGLISH SHUDY TEND TO
ACHIEVE A HIGHER DEGREE OF EJL PROFICIENCY. HOWEVER, THOSE WHO ARR MORE
