Twelve older adults were interviewed. </p><p> Companion pets encouraged pet owners, who had at least one dog, to walk more. Companionship and a decrease in loneliness were two of the common themes in regards to the positive impact of pets on psychological well-being. More than half reported that their companion pets improved their social well-being by increasing their opportunities to meet new people.
