Though some scholarship on Masekela and jazz in South Africa exists, no study has offered musical analysis of Masekela’s prolific body of work. The purpose of this document is to examine Masekela’s musical and personal evolution towards advocacy and activism, and to identify and analyze elements of protest within his music.
