Education Educational Leadership Gender Gender Charisma Charismatic Leadership Education Perception Qualitative This qualitative study examines the perceptions of individuals regarding leaders they identify as charismatic and the specific attributes those leaders exhibit. The purpose of this study was to determine if charisma is perceived similarly in men and women leaders, or if perceptions of charismatic leadership are gender specific, and to explore whether these perceptions are a function of the gender of the perceiver. Specifically, do men and women perceive different attributes in the male and female leaders they identify as charismatic? Documenting such differentiation could lead to greater understanding of the processes that facilitate the emergence of charismatic leaders (Jones, 2001) and provide insight into inherent differentiation that may contribute to implied preferential treatment in leadership potential and contributions of individuals based on gender. In the interest of providing a stronger foundation for understanding the way charismatic leadership is viewed among male and female leaders, this study examined the attributes attributed to these leaders by male and female participants. Identifying and discovering if there are perceived differences in charismatic leadership traits and behaviors based upon gender could advance theory and promote a deeper appreciation for how these perceptions contribute to leader emergence, advancement and effectiveness. Recognizing and identifying how individuals perceive charismatic leaders based on their own gender and how charismatic leaders are described based on their gender is enlightening. 2017-12-12 English text Xavier University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=xavier1513007723954717 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=xavier1513007723954717 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
