ndltd-OhioLink-oai-etd.ohiolink.edu-xavier1511268057743132021-08-03T07:04:34Z Validation of the Executive Function Index Smithmyer, Patricia Jane Psychology executive function The present study investigated the validity of the Executive Function Index (EFI) (Spinella, 2005) beyond what had been previously established (Janssen, De Mey, & Egger, 2009; Miley & Spinella, 2006; Miley & Spinella, 2007; Spinella, 2005). More specifically, because of discrepancies in the underlying factor structure reported by previous studies (Janssen et aI., 2009; Spinella, 2005), the construct validity of the EFI was examined by factor analysis. In addition, the relationships between the subscales of the EFI and other empirically validated self-report measures of the aforementioned factors were examined. Finally, the participants were 208 Xavier University undergraduates. Significant correlations were found between the EFI total score, the EFI subscale scores, and the respective empirically validated self-report measures' scores. Factor analysis confirmed the original five factor structure. The internal consistency for the overall scale and the subscales of Organization, Impulse Control, Motivation, and Strategic Planning was unacceptable, while the internal consistency of the Empathy subscale was considered fair. The internal consistency and validity of the EFI in the current study, the original validation study (Spinella, 2005) and Dutch validation study (Janssen, De Mey, & Egger, 2009) were compared and examined.
