Psychology HIV AIDS attribution theory mode of acquisition age older adults stigma Due to a variety of factors, the number of older adults with HIV/AIDS is increasing at a rate never seen before. These persons may well be at risk of being doubly stigmatized: for being older and for being HIV/AIDS-positive. Utilizing Weiner’s attribution theory, the primary focus of this study was to examine the potential effects of age and mode of acquisition in the perceptions and emotions toward adults with HIV. Participants in the study were 251 undergraduate students from a Midwestern university who completed measures of perceived responsibility, anger, pity, empathy, and willingness to help after reading a vignette about an adult who was recently diagnosed with HIV. Consistent with Weiner’s attribution theory, results indicated that adults who acquired HIV via risky sexual behavior (controllable) elicited negative perceptions and emotions when compared to adults who acquired HIV via blood transfusion (uncontrollable) and adults who acquired HIV with no other information given (control condition). Age of the person in the vignette was generally not a significant factor on perceptions and emotions, also consistent with hypotheses. This research suggests that persons with HIV/AIDS are assumed to be responsible for their diagnosis and therefore elicit negative perceptions and emotions from society, regardless of age. 2016-04-12 English text Xavier University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=xavier1460401103 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=xavier1460401103 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
