Given that implicit racial biases have been shown to result in racial microaggressions, researchers have focused on ways to reduce implicit racial biases in adults, yet such interventions have not been examined with children. The aim of the current study was to explore the use of a brief computer intervention, the evaluative conditioning procedure, in reducing implicit racial attitudes in children. Sixty-six participants, recruited from a racially homogenous White elementary school were randomly assigned to complete the evaluative conditioning task or a control task. Participants then completed the affective priming task as a measure of implicit racial biases and a self-reported racial preference task as a measure of explicit racial biases. Results indicated that participants completing the evaluative conditioning task failed to demonstrate significantly less implicit racial biases in comparison to participants completing the control task. The limitations of the research measures and sample characteristics are explored along with considerations for continued research in this important area. 2011 English text Xavier University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=xavier1395308794 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=xavier1395308794 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
