Behavioral Psychology Social Psychology Criminology social sciences psychology risk factors courtship violence dating violence This study builds upon the research by Sharpe and Taylor (1999) who pointed out that much of the research into courtship violence lacks a theoretical focus. As such, this study examined whether variables derived from the social-developmental model of Erikson increased the predictability of violence in courtship relationships and whether the additional variable of trait anger added to the predictability of violence. Participants completed measures of self-esteem, personal power, peer relations, codependency, love, trait anger, and the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2). The measures of love and trait anger positively correlated with the CTS2. The variables of peer relations and trait anger predicted self-reported physical violence. Additionally, trait anger predicted self- reported psychological aggressive tactics as measured by the CTS2. Further, romantic love, and trait anger predicted self-reported negotiation tactics. Finally, it was anticipated that there would be a significant difference between the four types of violence as measured by the CTS2: no violence, one-way received, one-way expressed, and bidirectional. A significant difference was found between bidirectional and no violence. The implications of these findings for understanding the origins and context of dating violence are discussed. 2008 English text Xavier University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=xavier1386598246 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=xavier1386598246 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
