Psychology Military Studies Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom OIF OEF pre-deployment mental health aeromedical evacuation psychiatric evacuation deployment high risk evacuation military evacuation This dissertation examines the relationship between pre-deployment mental health variables and aeromedical risk categories for U.S. military service members (9,069 members) returned from deployment for mental health reasons during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom (OIF/OEF) from 2001 to 2014. Specifically, this study hypothesized that service members returned in the highest risk evacuation categories (IA and IB) would be more likely to have pre-deployment mental health encounters in the two years prior to deployment. This dissertation used a binary logistic regression to assess the odds of the highest-risk evacuation categories against variables such as branch, gender, rank, age, prior mental health encounters, and number of prior mental health encounters. Dissertation results concluded that the odds of being in a high-risk evacuation category decrease as rank increases, the odds of being in a high-risk evacuation category decrease as age increases, and the odds of Marines being in high risk evacuation categories are lower than they are for the base grouping (Army). The primary hypothesis- greater past mental health encounters would have increased odds of high-risk mental health evacuation categorization- was not supported by the data. These findings highlight that rank, age, and branch are all important in examining the odds of a service member being a high versus low-risk evacuee from 2001 to 2014 during OIF/OEF. 2019 English text Wright State University Professional Psychology Program / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=wsupsych154275030459532 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=wsupsych154275030459532 restricted--full text not available online This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
