The survey was an original measure created by the researcher. It was hypothesized that a dentist who felt more positively about his or her opioid education would prescribe opioids less frequently, have a decreased preference for prescribing opioids, form stronger patient relationships and adhere more strictly to the ethical standards of dentists. It was also hypothesized that a dentist who received more lecture hours on addiction and on safe prescribing while in dental school would prescribe opioids less frequently, have a decreased preference for prescribing opioids, form stronger patient relationships and adhere more strictly to the ethical standards. There was a significant relationship found between lecture hours on safe prescribing and recommending drug rehabilitation treatment to patients showing signs of substance abuse. Dentists who received more lecture hours on safe prescribing were more likely to recommend drug rehabilitation treatment to patients showing signs of substance abuse. This significant relationship was under the broader variable of ethical adherence. Therefore, a significant relationship was found between lecture hours and ethical adherence. Dentists who received more lecture hours on safe prescribing more strictly adhered to ethical practices of dentists. 2018 English text Walsh University Honors Theses / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=walshhonors1524605016944778 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=walshhonors1524605016944778 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
