Since abused children manifest emotional dysfunction resulting in maladjusted behavior, the types of therapy compared in this thesis are those particularly designed to understand the root of maladjusted behavior and to correct it by exploring different avenues with which behavior can be adapted. The thesis also examines the impact of the surrounding Appalachian culture on the Buckhorn model of therapy. Since the authors developed the model at the Buckhorn's Children's Center in the heart of Appalachia Kentucky, cultural influences were implicit in the model. This thesis offers an interesting look at the degree to which cultural values can influence a model of therapy. In rating the Buckhorn model of therapy, it was determined to reflect aspects from both the Appalachian culture and a "milieu" therapeutic treatment approach. Buckhorn's therapeutic philosophy promotes teaching individuals about their strengths to catalyze emotional growth in a positive, responsible direction. This philosophy heavily influences the way in which individuals leaving the Buckhorn community will re-enter and assimilate into a world characterized by stress, violence and material success. Additionally, the Buckhorn experience will positively influence individuals as they venture into the world, using their acquired knowledge to augment a personal sense of responsibility, accountability and well being. 2000 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin974918319 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin974918319 restricted--full text not available online This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
