So, if you’re expecting an orgasm it probably will not happen”: An Exploration of Stigma Perceptions, Experiences, and Management of Sexual Health through Disclosure Processes Tucker, Rachel V., B.A. Communication sexual health stigma communication stigma management disclosure difficulty orgasming Individuals with concealable stigma must continually manage disclosure decisions. Since concealable stigma is not immediately apparent or visible to others, individuals must continually decide whether or not, and if so, how to disclose their stigmatized identity and/or condition to others. These challenges are evident in extant literature about difficulty orgasming. Previous research suggests that women are reluctant to disclose their experience with difficulty orgasming to others and experience both positive and negative outcomes due to disclosure. However, the range of factors women consider prior to, as well as the psychological, emotional, and relational outcomes of (non)disclosure within this context require further examination. Drawing from extant literature on concealable stigma, stigma management, and disclosure, this study explores perceptions of and experiences with concealable stigma among women who have difficulty orgasming and the disclosure processes within their sexual and/or romantic relationships. To do this, an empirical, qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews and a brief online survey was conducted (N=31). To identify patterns and themes in the data, phronetic iterative analysis was used. The findings from this study highlight several contextual and situational factors that shape (non)disclosure, motivations for (non)disclosure, outcomes of (non)disclosure, and the role of partner reactions in shaping disclosure outcomes. This study fosters a more holistic understanding of the disclosure processes women who have difficulty orgasming experience, as well as the way stigma is perceived, experienced, and managed within this context. These findings also have practical implications that may be used to improve health, well-being, and quality of life. 2021-10-04 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1627665965535565 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1627665965535565 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
