Psychology Burnout Nurses Competence Time with Patients Across the globe, there is currently a nursing crisis, with the demand for qualified nursing staff far exceeding the available pool. This is due, in part, to nurses leaving the profession prematurely as a result of experiencing high rates of burnout. These detrimental outcomes continue to occur at rapid numbers in the nursing population. Many nurses enter the nursing profession because they want to help patients; however, they often spend less time directly caring for patients than they would prefer, which could lead to diminished feelings of competence. At the same time, spending greater amounts of time with patients has been linked to burnout, a significant predictor of turnover. This creates a paradox as time spent with patients may have both positive and negative effects. Using the tenants of the job-demand-control model, this study attempts to resolve this paradox by examining the role of job control in mitigating the potential adverse effects of time spent with patients on nurses need for competence and burnout. Results from a diverse sample of 36 nurses provide some preliminary support for the hypothesized relationships. Implications for practice and research are discussed. 2021-10-05 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1626356561343293 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1626356561343293 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
