Although there are a growing number of authors who make this claim across disciplines, there is yet to be a comprehensive account of what it would mean to share another’s emotion, and whether such a thing literally happens, or is only a manner of speech. My dissertation addresses these issues. Drawing from work in philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and biology, I put forth an empirically grounded theory of emotion sharing.
