School leaders are facing challenges to collaborate with all stakeholders to improve ELs’ acculturation and learning outcomes. The previous research indicates that collaborative school leadership and parents’ involvement are associated with students’ acculturation and achievement. This study examines how principals collaborate with school staff, faculty, and parents to help Chinese ELs with their school acculturation and improve their school achievement. This qualitative case study applied the snowball sampling strategies to recruit five Chinese parents, four teachers, two principals, a school psychologist, and a school coordinator from two Elementary schools in Ohio. Data sources for this study included interviews, documentation, memos, and reflective journals. Findings showed that parents and schools had applied different strategies to collaborate, but they faced many challenges. Factors that impeded parental involvement include cultural discrepancy, parents’ unfamiliarity with the school system, language barrier, and logistic issue. Besides, teachers' biased attitudes and lack of training in engagement and cultural competency contributed to the home-school collaboration. Principals play a role in supporting and facilitating collaboration between home and school. A modified Educational Leadership in Collaboration Framework is presented for school leaders to consider applying to enhance Chinese ELs’ school acculturation and achievement. 2020-10-15 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1595848654225359 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1595848654225359 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: some rights reserved.
