Physiological Psychology Gastric Ulcer Repair CD44 Aging Hedgehog xCT ROS Our goal is to understand the process of gastric epithelial repair after injury. Despite evidence showing that ulcers and subsequent complications are a burden that is focused in the elderly, there is a lack of knowledge as to the molecular mechanisms that disrupt normal repair even after H. pylori eradication. While it is established that the incidence of gastric ulcers in the elderly is primarily due to increased NSAID use and increased H. pylori infection, the tissue’s ability to repair gastric injuries is impaired. We have demonstrated that repair within the aged stomach is compromised whereby the gastric epithelium does not heal normally and exhibits abnormal cell composition post-repair. There are a number of mechanisms of action that may prevent the gastric mucosa from healing normally in response to injury, including decreased regenerative capacity suggesting changes in epithelial stem cells. 2019-10-14 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1563872522774123 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1563872522774123 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: some rights reserved.
