Computer Science Visible Light Communication Screen to Camera Link Embedded System Computer Communication Optical Communication (OpCom) is a new method of data transfer from computers andsmartphones to embedded systems using Visible Light Communication (VLC). OpCom differsfrom existing VLC technology in that it uses an ordinary LCD computer display as thetransmitter. To make communication possible with standard displays, OpCom uses aspecialized encoding and decoding design that overcomes the timing limitations and expectedinterference. This unique design allows the OpCom receiver to operate with common analogcomponents in a microprocessor environment. OpCom includes packetization and forward errorrecovery to strengthen the communication against corruption when transmitting data thatrequires multiple seconds to transfer. The simple hardware implementation and low resourcerequirements make OpCom ideal for applications with embedded systems. The intended application for OpCom is the secure configuration of embedded systems inthe Internet of Things (IoT) market. These devices use radio to communicate privately withother IoT devices in their network, but lack secure configuration tools for setting up theencrypted radio channel. The existing setup process relies on cleartext broadcast of sensitivenetwork keys, initiated by the user from their phone or computer. OpCom provides a betteralternative: a local, secure means to communicate with these devices during the configurationstage, acting as an out of band communication channel for the radio. Transmitting with theuser’s existing display eliminates costly external hardware and makes the process easy to use. These advantages are designed to encourage device manufacturers to incorporate thistechnology into products that can leverage the privacy in VLC to provide better data security tocustomers. 2019-07-09 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1553618192441296 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1553618192441296 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
