Keller, Haley Counseling Psychology self-efficacy genetic counseling self-efficacy scale personality locus of control anxiety The purpose of the current study was to provide further validation of the Genetic Counseling Self-Efficacy Scale (GCSES) by determining the relationship between genetic counseling self-efficacy, personality characteristics, and performance on the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC) board certification exam. In this study, genetic counselors completed a questionnaire that included the GCSES, work locus of control scale, trait subscale of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and questions related to board exam performance. Increased genetic counseling self-efficacy was found to be positively related to internal work locus of control and negatively related to higher trait anxiety. In addition, genetic counselors’ years of experience and the genetic counselors’ current position (direct patient care vs non-direct patient care) were found to be significantly related to factor scores on the GCSES. Findings from the current study (a) provide additional validation for the GCSES, (b) serve to add clarity to the relationships between genetic counseling self-efficacy, and personality characteristics, and (c) promote genetic counselor professional development. Further studies characterizing the relationship between genetic counseling self-efficacy and genetic counseling competencies may aid in better understanding the differences and/or similarities between genetic counseling self-efficacy and genetic counselor competency. 2019-07-09 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1553250401455124 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1553250401455124 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
