These blooms, which can result from the eutrophication of various bodies of water, are often dominated by cyanobacteria; photosynthetic bacteria with the ability to synthesize toxins harmful to human health and the environment. When the cell integrity of these bacteria is compromised these toxins can be released into water used for human consumption and recreation. There are several water treatment methods used to help mitigate the issues caused by cyanotoxins including pre-oxidation, advanced oxidation technologies and activated carbon. One oxidant commonly-used by water treatment plant operators that has shown success in oxidizing cyanotoxins is potassium permanganate (KMnO4 or “permanganate”). There are, however, multiple studies showing that permanganate may cause the release of cyanotoxins. All of these studies used different experimental conditions that potentially affect the way in which cultures reacted to oxidation. 2018 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1543922931806964 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1543922931806964 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
