The loss of job opportunities led to decline in population and deterioration of historic downtowns and amenities in and around cities. This book explores the solution to the struggling city of New Philadelphia by raising the quality of life for the residents using both architectural and urbanistic approaches.Small towns which succeeded in improved the city acknowledge the difficulty of attracting manufacturers solely with financial incentives. They have instead shifted the tactics from economical encouragement to the enhancement of the city itself with the goal of creating a city that companies choose to relocate even without the monetary compensation. By examining these successful cities, a recommendation will be made to the city of New Philadelphia to create a riverfront development and connection to the nature of the Tuscarawas river. Although the river in the past played a major role in the development of the city, pedestrians have been unable to access the water in the recent years. Reconnecting the people of New Philadelphia back to the Tuscarawas river will raise the quality of life through the connection to the natural environment with a goal to attract people and businesses back to the city.Raising the quality of life by reconnecting the residents to nature is not the sole solution to New Philadelphia’s issues. Along with this thesis’s recommendation, three colleagues will propose to tackle New Philadelphia’s aging population by introducing aging in place, densifying the downtown area by introducing student housing and revitalizing the downtown corridor by introducing new storefronts and public areas. The combination of the four theses will provide the City of New Philadelphia a wholistic solution to halt the downturn and make the city of New Philadelphia thrive in 21st century. 2018-09-28 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1522342474852826 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1522342474852826 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: some rights reserved.
