A real-time weather monitoring and warning system for many bridges in NorthAmerica was developed by the UCII research team of University of Cincinnati. The existingsystem uses many weather parameters to detect and predict snowfall accumulation andsubsequent shedding on the Veterans’ Glass City Skyway Bridge. It issues alarms and alerts toODOT officials during an icing event based on the analysis done on the data collected from theweather stations and sensors on and around the bridge. This thesis is developed to investigate the feasibility of applying the same accretion andshedding algorithm over a much larger geographical area using minimal and unreliable weatherdata. This thesis will compare and quantify the accuracy of the accretion and sheddingalgorithm in this scenario against the existing system scenario. The result of the newgeographically distributed algorithm would be a two dimensional graphical representation thatwill allow the human mind to better understand the historical and current weather events andpossibly help improve the system to predict future icing events. 2017 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1504874000423949 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1504874000423949 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
