Music Between Dust and Being is a single movement essay for wind ensemble on the relationship between stasis and motion and our perception of time. The materials in this piece are of a recursive nature, yet are through-composed and continually increase their forward momentum through a gradually increasing harmonic rhythm. The image that inspired this piece was a video of a large, decrepit brick factory being demolished in an incredibly detailed slow-motion— a structure returning to dust. The beginning texture of this piece captures this image with glacially slow tutti chords chromatically disintegrating up through the overtone series built on low E and F# fundamental pitches. This piece also encapsulates several musical techniques which I consider to be hallmarks of my personal style that I developed during my graduate studies at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. The first technique is the utilization of rotational techniques at the surface and structural levels—a means of expressing stasis and motion simultaneously. The second section uses a rotation of three block-textures, each of which with a varying degree of harmonic, melodic, and timbral development. The rotation on the surface of the music is mirrored by a closed harmonic cycle built on consecutive transpositions of key centers by minor and major thirds. The second technique is that of a through-composed musical process, in this instances being the gradually increasing harmonic rhythm that leads to bursting, colorful modal harmonies and florid counterpoint at the apex of the piece. 2017-06-16 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1491558904033591 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1491558904033591 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
