Chemistry Green Chemistry High Speed Ball Milling Substitution Enolates Solvent-free As environmental concerns are becoming more prominent in today’s societythrough a modern environmental movement, Green Chemistry has evolved with the effortto reduce the harmful impact of chemical waste. Ideally, Green Chemists would be able toeliminate all hazardous and wasteful components of their experiments. With that loftygoal, a series of principles have been outlined which guide chemists in synthetic designand implementation towards safety and waste reduction. Following this approach, theMack group has adapted a solventless method which uses high speed ball milling. Sincethe role of the solvent is to break-down the reagents and disperse the molecules so that areaction can occur, the ball mill replicates this process through shaking and mixing.Although this process has been applied to a wide range of chemical reactions, thefundamental principles are still not fully understood in the context of a solvent-freesystem. In order for these new Green Chemistry methodologies to be adopted, theseknowledge gaps must be filled. Substitution reactions encompass one of the largestcategories of organic chemistry and this work seeks to elucidate the similarities anddifferences with known solution reactivity. 2016 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1479816113315302 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1479816113315302 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
