Context can change a person’s ideas and the manner in which they choose to express themselves. Some thoughts thrive when they gradually develop as little fragments that randomly bounce around in our minds throughout the day, while other thoughts gain strength and clarity through meaningful exchange with strangers, friends and/or colleagues. A colloquy, by definition, is a conversation on a serious or high-level topic. This piece is called “Colloquy” because it explores the notion that ideas benefit through dialog. It is not only that such conversational exchanges provide a great deal of time and opposing ideas that allow thoughts to become more refined and focused. The mere presence of another human body is a positive influence. When compelled to present an idea in a social setting, people try to adjust their language but there is always an unavoidable uniqueness to their delivery. This is true of both words expressed in conversation and musical gestures expressed in an ensemble work. As people continue in a colloquy, their expression can draw on various forms. A frustrated monolog, an austere lecturing tone or even the cathartic arrival on a point of agreement can all come into play. This is also comparable to a work for a group of musicians.
