An economic analysis of the current furfural production process demonstrated that the most significant shortfall is the low industrial yield which typically averages about 40-50% of the theoretical yield. The primary objective of this work was to improve upon this poor yield by building a kinetic model. This model was used to analyze the shortcomings of the current industrial method of producing furfural and to predict the capabilities of a novel biphasic reactor.
