Architecture The very notion of environmental sustainability and stewardship is being fundamentallyundermined by residential home building trends in the U.S and globally. These trendsare characterized by the continued growth of the suburbs, increasing size of homes, and decreasing size of households, with concomitant depopulation and economic andmaterial decline of urban neighborhoods. This thesis explores the relationship betweenthe growing suburbs, the urban core and contemporary culture. This exploration is usedto inform an architectural response that is intended to make a contribution to the reversalof these unsustainable trends. This thesis supports the argument that a progressive residential architecture will allowfor sustainable homes without sacrificing good design and while also maintaining a costmodel that is appropriate to a young, professional demographic. The resulting design is aprogressive residential typology and prototype for urban infill on vacant lots. This single-family, residential typology will harmoniously integrate good design, sustainability and cost appropriateness by focusing on optimizing four categories ofconstruction and design: size, structure, site, and interior finishes. 2015-09-10 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1439279886 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1439279886 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: some rights reserved.
