Multimodal monitoring refers to the science of acquisition and analysis of multiple parameters with the aim of identifying trends and relationships that might give clues indicating the patient’s condition. TBI is often very hard to analyze as most of its symptoms occur internally. Undetected secondary insults may further damage the brain after an injury. The objective of this thesis is to develop a system that would enable the clinician to study trends in multiple parameters inside the brain and provide targeted treatment based on this information.

The monitoring system was developed in coordination with the development of a lab-on-a-tube microcatheter containing multiple sensors embedded on a flexible substrate. An integrated acquisition system has been designed that would encompass the components needed to acquire and analyze all of these signals, namely – intracranial pressure, temperature, oxygen, glucose, lactate, flow and ECoG (electrocorticogram) - and present them on an elegant user interface. Data logging functions have also been included. Signal acquisition and processing is handled by using a CompactRIO (Reconfigurable I/O) module, from National Instruments, containing an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) and a real-time controller. A touch panel has been employed to act as the user interface for the system. The system was tested by simultaneously acquiring multiple channels of simulated signals at different frequencies, following which further testing was done by interfacing the system with a catheter dipped in a clinical sample of human CSF (cerebrospinal fluid)/blood. Flow and temperature measurements were made and response of the system to changes in the sensor readings was confirmed.
2012-10-11 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1342463255 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1342463255 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
