Supercapacitors can play a key role in the drive towards a cleaner and greener environment. This research focuses on the properties of electrochemical cells and the application of conductive polymer composites as effective electrode materials in a supercapacitor. The effect of electrochemical cell parameters like distance of separation, electrolyte and separator material on the overall capacitance was studied. An innovative two electrode cell design was developed to facilitate these measurements. Conductive polymer composites were prepared using physical milling and pressed into pellets using hot pressing and normal pressing techniques. The characterization of conductive polymer composite electrode based supercapacitors was carried out using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry. The performance of two polymers (polyaniline and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) with different levels of conductivity was compared, in order to understand the double layer capacitance and pseudo-capacitance mechanisms.
