Behavioral Sciences Recurrence quantification Respiration Coordination Center of pressure Synergy The respiratory and postural systems influence each other during both static and dynamic postures (e.g., walking). The trunk constitutes a large proportion of the body mass and significantly affects the position of the center of gravity. Intrinsic fluctuations of the upper body due to respiration therefore influence the activity of the whole postural system. The current thesis examined the respiratory modulations that occur when a manual precision aiming task is performed while maintaining upright stance, and the relationship of those modulations to postural sway. Participants were required to aim at targets of different sizes and press a button on an aiming device to “hit” the target. Experiment 1 determined whether increased precision requirements (decreased target size) affected respiratory dynamics and influenced the coordination between breathing and button presses. The experiment also examined the relation between breathing and the center of pressure during performance on the aiming task while sitting versus standing. Results showed that breathing became slower with more difficult targets compared to the easier one and that participants tended to press the response button toward the end of the inspiratory phase in the most difficult condition when sitting but not standing. The relation between breathing and the center of pressure was also affected by performance of the aiming task such that coherence between them became stronger in sitting but not standing, suggesting an important role of task demands in coordinating the activity of the postural-respiratory synergy. Experiment 2 showed that breathing could also slow down as a function of the frequency of wrist movements without explicit precision requirements. Experiment 3 further confirmed the findings from Experiment 1 regarding the effects of the precision requirement on the respiratory dynamics. These results suggest that the respiratory system subtly adjusts to the requirements of the supra-postural manual aiming task. 2010 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1291407910 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1291407910 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
