However, like the works of other contemporary women writers, these stories also exhume, upturn, and resist the domestic tradition through a rejection of domestic realiasm and the “bourgeois” sentimentalism that has come to define it. Stories in this collection draw upon elements of the bizarre, the magical, the surreal, the fantastic, and the otherworldly as a manner of disguising the domestic-as a mode of distraction that allows for the telling of conventional stories that center around the domestic sphere. Characters in theses stories often find themselves in odd and precarious situations-marrying the ashes of a deceased fiancé, opening their homes as “living art” museums, staging their own funerals, relying on the power of witches-however; at its core, this collection examines the complex lives of families, the awkward tensions of relationships, and the individual's struggle to identify in a psychologically dislocating and mundane world. A Recipe for Everything combines domestic realism with formal experimentalism and elements of fantasy in an attempt to bring my reader to a more complicated sense of reality, one that defamiliarizes traditional settings in order to examine them more closely. The critical portion of this dissertation examines the suburban tradition of American literature and the ways in which Julia Slavin, a contemporary writer, engages with and offers up a feminist revision of this traditionally masculine, realist domain. 2009-07-23 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1242923523 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1242923523 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
