Architecture housing mcmansion developer sustainable affordable accessible square footage In the recent past Americans have had an appetite to own ever larger homes. Builders have satisfied this appetite by trading off price against site qualities and identity; they offer little real choice in the homes they build, and they flatten and strip sites to facilitate rapid building. These homes seem appealing on the outside, but are often poorly built with little personal character. The premise of this investigation is that for a certain segment of the population, this trade-off is no longer acceptable. Houses can be sustainable, take advantage of positive site features and offer greater customization, at the price of diminishing in square footage and an alternate process. After examining new and historical precedents for alternative homes, my proposal creates a new model to replace the existing tract housing “McMansions” through systems of customization and efficiency. Marketing this new prototype will be as important as the design itself. I examine current marketing techniques from housing and related industries which could serve to promote a new model for the next generation of housing development. 2009-08-10 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1242664323 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1242664323 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
