Architecture Art Education The thesis proposes a design of a fine arts center for the Jackson Square community, located 5.5 miles southwest of downtown Boston. The area demographics comprise of mainly lower income families of Hispanic and African American heritage. The community, comprised mainly of residents from the Jamaica Plain neighborhood, faced great turmoil in the 1960s when the city proposed an extension of I-95, which led to the clearing of many homes and businesses. While the community residents were successful in stopping the highway construction, the land cleared remains primarily vacant today. Presently, a tension has developed among neighborhood residents that have resulted in gang fights. The current program for the neighborhood's redevelopment includes housing, youth and family services, and commercial facilities. The thesis explores another building type that may be better suited to allow for a heightened community outlook. A fine arts center will provide members of the community opportunities to discover commonalities amongst themselves through communal and individual creative expression, stitching together the broken fabric of the neighborhood.The American school system is the product of a white, middle-class culture that illustrates the customs and values of a remote society. Students of a lower class, minority sector struggle to follow this conventional form of pedagogy. Visual arts, on the other hand, are a universal form of expression that offer people of all races and cultural backgrounds a unique learning opportunity. Teaching art as a humanistic endeavor, where students may use personal life experiences to explore a dialogue between their feelings and work, allow for broader cultural participation and improvement of community life.
