Architecture In the business of speculative residential development, the vision of the architect is typically subordinate to the economic objectives of the project as determined by the developer. Because the developer assumes the financial risk of a project, they also typically determine the design priorities of that project. A developer-controlled design process yields generic residential developments often copying already successful designs as a way to mitigate financial risk. The result is an industry that is slow to change, discouraging innovation that would otherwise be ushered in by architects. If the architect were to shift perspectives to think as a developer they might conceptualize space not only for its architectural opportunities, but also for its money making potential.
