Architecture children's design architecture cognitive development Child development experts agree that play is critical in early childhood cognitive development, yet many children spend eight hours a day in bland environments that are not designed for, nor are conducive to play. A box with white gypsum board walls, vinyl composite tile, windows above eye level, and acoustic tile ceilings does nothing to encourage growth through play. Children’s facilities design has focused for too long on cost and simplicity in design, resulting in spaces that are no longer supported by current psychological theory and research in early childhood development. Research has discovered that even though many different design fields concern themselves with children’s play areas, very little change in children’s design has occurred over time as research into play has advanced. Even playgrounds have not significantly changed since their inception a century ago. To create new environments designed for children’s play and in turn cognitive development, designers must seek to incorporate current psychological findings into the already complicated process of design. Designers need to acknowledge that children need better spaces designed for play. This thesis seeks to help fulfill this need by re-examining the design of children’s space with respect to current psychological theory and research in early childhood development regarding play. It promotes environmental design that is concurrent with ideas of socio-dramatic, constructive, goal oriented, peer, and free play resulting in the design of a series of spaces that reflect appropriate physical environments with respect to development and types of play.
