Geology channel formation deglaciation Miami Lobe paleochannel meltwater Ohio glaciation Channel development during deglaciation along the southern margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet in central Ohio has not been previously studied. Moreover, sedimentary characteristics and temporal distribution has not been examined. In this study, forty paleochannels associated with the Miami lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, near Piqua, Ohio were examined to determine variations in style of glacial retreat during deglaciation. Analysis is based on variation between spatial distribution of channels, sediment sequences identified in channel x-section and channel transverse gradient (across direction of flow). Spatial distribution and channel development is used as a proxy for meltwater production and sediment sequences are determined to describe depositional processes involved with the evolution of each channel. Data recovered was compared using both observation and statistical methods in order to determine a classification scheme associated with these parameters. Determining a classification scheme will aid in characterizing channels in other areas. Results indicate that variation in the production of new channels and the distribution of new channels along an ice margin is not variable through this study area. Approximately 8 new channels occur along the margin of each moraine studied, trending west to northeast. These channels occur every 2 to 5 km’s Therefore, results indicate that changes in the speed of deglaciation and the amount of meltwater produced were not variable during ice retreat of this part of the Miami lobe. Sediment sequences identified in this study indicate that deposition in paleovalleys has occurred both from fluvial and eolian processes. Observational and statistical comparison of sediment data to channel orientation based on whether it dissects or flows parallel to moraines and sediment data compared to channel transverse gradient (across flow) indicats that there is not a strong correlation between these three parameters. Therefore, determining a classification scheme based on these parameters is not plausible at this time. Timing of events for the aforementioned conclusions is linked to six discontinuous moraines trending west to northeast through the study area. Timing of formation of paleochannels is determined from the recovery of two new radiocarbon dates, 15,780±110 (ETH-30202) and 15,710±100 (ETH-30203). These dates augment and constrain research by Glover (2004) which suggested that ice retreated through the area approximately 15,000 radiocarbon years ago. New data presented indicates that ice retreated through this study area approximately 15,710 radiocarbon years ago. 2006-07-17 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1147876928 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1147876928 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
