Radiation exposure has been studied at two gaseous diffusion plants. Some of these studies included selected chemical exposures. However, previous studies have not examined an extensive list of chemical exposures and these studies have not looked at the interactions of radiological and chemical exposures. No study has been conducted at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) that has evaluated health effects of worker exposure. The PGDP is a uranium enrichment facility that produces uranium enriched up to 5% U-235 for commercial nuclear power plants in the United States and worldwide. Built originally in the early 1950’s, this plant has seen only 3 major process modifications/renovations. Few other changes have been made throughout the plant. The PGDP consists of 161 buildings, 4 process buildings, and 1760 enrichment stages and currently employs about 1,400 people. This study serves to simplify complex exposure data for selected metals so that it can easily be used in the future to develop lifetime working exposures for each individual person who ever worked at the plant. Metals of interest are arsenic, beryllium, hexavalent chromium, nickel, and uranium metal. An original list of job titles consisting of 2,727 unique entries was obtained and was reduced to 44 grouped job titles by grouping like job titles together based on job tasks, materials used, and movement throughout the plant. The grouped job titles were then ranked in a qualitative and categorical manner based on the relative likelihood of exposure to each of the chemicals. The results were compiled in a Job Exposure Matrix that shows the exposure rank for each job grouping to each metal. Supplemental tables document the rationale for each rank. Company representatives and long term workers reviewed the grouped job titles and the exposure rankings. These data will later be expanded with the addition of quantitative data as they become available. The final Job Exposure Matrix will be used to determine working lifetime exposures where possible. The results of this study will be used in a cohort mortality study that will evaluate exposure-response. 2005-09-28 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1123620720 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1123620720 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
