Whether or not change is planned, all buildings are inevitably transformed by their users’ evolving needs. This study began with the question, “Could buildings function more like dynamic, living systems in order to respond to the lives of the people that they support and the changing social contexts in which they are used?” Traditional building methods were very successful at this, but the contemporary situation calls for new strategies. An alternative design methodology is suggested that takes into account the unknowns of a building in conjunction with its needs. As an example, this process is used to design a media center addition to the Main Public Library of Cincinnati - a type of building which by necessity must undergo a multitude of unpredictable changes. 2005-07-14 English text University of Cincinnati / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1116000373 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ucin1116000373 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
