Ecology Environmental Studies Urban Planning Cities and their ecology are generally understudied facets of the modern landscape. Microsites - a kind of informal green space - in particular are not well understood. This study examines microsites in neighborhood parks in Cleveland, Ohio, to determine (1) how site, matrix, and plant characteristics determine species composition in a microsite, and (2) how vegetation communities in these microsites provision resources to urban wildlife. To answer these questions, vegetation in 42 plots was sampled, distance to potential refugia parcels and matrix cover were measured, and species traits related to dispersal, persistence, and provisioning value to wildlife were compiled. Vegetation community assemblage and species occurrence did not appear to be driven by the variables measured here; I offer a number of hypotheses why this might be the case. Although site and matrix characteristics were not found to drive species or trait occurrence, certain traits appeared to be more advantageous in the urban environment, and plants possessing these traits tended to dominate plots. Additionally, all of the plant community groups defined have the capacity to provide food to urban wildlife spring-fall. 2020 English text Ohio University Honors Tutorial College / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ouhonors1587738269628448 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ouhonors1587738269628448 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
