Biology Biomedical Research Dentistry Anatomy and Physiology Biomechanics kinematics XROMM mastication rabbits sensorimotor integration occlusion TMJ fluoroscopy Mastication, or chewing, requires precise 3D jaw movements to align the teethallowing animals to process foods of various mechanical properties in order to extractessential nutrients. To regulate these precise movements, the brain uses sensory feedbackfrom a dense population of oral sensory receptors in the teeth, tongue, and oral mucosa. This process is known as sensorimotor integration. Sensorimotor integration can bedisrupted by many common dental procedures, such as wisdom tooth extractions. The goal of this research was to understand how the 3D movements of the jaw areaffected by the loss of sensory feedback from the oral cavity. Using X-ray Reconstructionof Moving Morphology and rabbits as an animal model, 3D kinematics of the gape cyclewere compared prior to and after injecting a local anesthetic to temporarily block allsensory nerves supplying receptors in the oral cavity. 3D kinematics are characterized byrotations and translations along 3 axes, which are labelled x, y and z. Rabbits utilize allthree rotations which include roll, pitch, and yaw. In addition, rabbits use anteroposteriorand dorsoventral translations. Local effects on jaw movement were found after nerveblocks which likely negatively impacts chewing performance and efficiency. Our resultshelp us to better understand dynamic control of occlusion in the context of alteredsensorimotor integration. This work has clinical implications for understanding how jawmovements and feeding performance in individuals with oral nerve injuries may beaffected. 2020 English text Ohio University Honors Tutorial College / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ouhonors1587404966088487 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=ouhonors1587404966088487 restricted--full text unavailable until 2022-01-28 This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
