The project is a three-part series of digital longform journalism stories about the impact of coal in southeast Ohio. The first part focuses on the history of the region's coal towns, the second part assesses coal's environmental impacts, and the third part includes reporting about a proposed surface mine. A scholarly essay is also included with a literature review of relevant topics such as environmental communication, Appalachia and the news media, and characteristics of digital longform journalism.
