The paper begins with a historical background of Unit 8200 and a description of its current state. It then introduces Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) as a conceptual framework for analysis. To assess the EO of Unit 8200 alumni, three methods are utilized: semi-structured interviews with members of Israel’s startup community supplemented by relevant media reports, computer-aided-textual-analysis (CATA) of Initial Public Offering (IPO) prospectuses from firms founded by Unit alumni, and financial ratio analysis of those same firms. The results show that these companies have a higher propensity for autonomy, risk-taking, and innovativeness than industry peers.
