Music Ethnic Studies The rapid growth of Latinx communities in the Appalachian region of the United States has disrupted historical and popular narratives of Appalachia as a white monolith. Latinx creative practices are increasingly visible and influential as Latinx Appalachians find meaningful ways to engage and blend Latinx and Appalachian musical traditions together. This dissertation traces the contours of Latinx Appalachian musical life. As the first in-depth study of Latinx creative practices in Appalachia, this dissertation relies on participant-observation-based ethnographic research and archival materials to facilitate an interdisciplinary analysis that draws on Appalachian studies, Latinx studies, and ethnomusicology. Previously overlooked histories of Latinx Appalachians, described in this document, inform a broader history of Latinx migration to the United States. My research collaborators merge Latinx and Appalachian traditions together in musical configurations they claim as “Mexilachian,” “Latingrass,” and “Appalatin”: their music indexes migratory subjectivities that are no less deeply rooted in place and intersectional identities that are no less coherent for their complexities .Ultimately, I find that these communities and their creative practices tell stories of a rich Latinx Appalachian ontology that responds and adapts to a constantly shifting U.S. social and political landscape. Latinx Appalachian music and its resonances, in turn, inspire more nuanced and compassionate conversations about migration and about the belonging of Latinx people in the United States. 2021-09-29 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1619115145510202 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1619115145510202 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
