The overlapping of so many identity nodal points forces these immigrant community to re-create communities based on a common memory. Any vestige of cultural manifestation represents the glue that keeps these groups together. Therefore, the cultural productions of such groups reflect the struggles and the changes the Japanese immigrants went through to establish their Nikkei (Japanese descendants living outside Japan) identity within Brazil and Peru. The case studies I will be analyzing are contemporary (20th and 21st Century) literatures and movies produced by Nipo-Brazilians and Nipo-Peruvians about their own cultural identity. From Brazil, my selection includes the novel Nihonjin (2010), by Oscar Nakasato; the movies Gaijin- caminhos da liberdade (1980), directed by Tizuka Yamazaki, and Coracões sujos (2010), directed by Vicente Amorim, an adaptation of the namesake book by Fernando Morais, a Nikkei writer. My selection from Peru includes Augusto Higa Oshiro’s La iluminacion de Katzuo Nakamatsu (2008), Nikkei (2011), directed by Kaori Flores Yonekura and La inmigracion japonesa en el Peru (2019), produced by Norma Martinez for the television show Sucedio en el Peru.My selection criteria consisted of searching for literary and artistic expressions that were projected inside and outside of Nikkei and national contexts and made their way around the world and back to Japan. The Brazilian pieces, products of the diaspora, were celebrated by the Nikkei community, became known by the national community and, were afterwards translated into Japanese/ English to be released in Japan. The works from Peru are exceptional productions that received recognition from the Japanese National Association as the most representative contemporary Nikkei expressions. 2020 Portuguese and English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1595590831072499 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1595590831072499 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: some rights reserved.
