In these essays, the narrator struggles with those tensions in three interrelated contexts. One is the context of trying to find God in evangelical faith communities. The narrator uses his alienating experiences at a religious university to distance himself from the church and from traditional faith practice. A second context is the narrator’s romantic life, where he attempts and fails to pursue lasting romantic relationships and reflects on his experiences in the world of casual dating, how those experiences shape or are shaped by his understanding of relationship, love, and community. A third context is the narrator’s relationships with family, the narrator considering how he allows space to grow between himself and family members, filling it with all the things he doesn’t tell them about his life or doesn’t ask about theirs. Of course, all these contexts share significant overlap, and many of the essays straddle their boundaries as well as boundaries of genre and form.
