Higher Education University residence halls are sites where students live, learn, and grow as they interact with their peers, meet others with different identities, and are exposed to new ideas and peoples (Blimling, 2015; Shook & Clay, 2012). At the same time, systems of power and oppression such homophobia influence the experience lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) students have on campus and in the residence halls (Evans & Broido, 1999; Fine, 2011). With this in mind, the purpose of this study was to explore residence hall roommate relationships across sexual orientation. This study utilized narrative inquiry to inform the methodology and was informed by previous research on Intergroup Contact Theory and Identity Disclosure.The findings illustrated that heterosexual students often did not think about the role sexual orientation played in their lives or in their roommate relationships, while LGBQ students did. That being said, all participants in this study generally agreed that sexual orientation was not a factor that influenced the way they interacted with their roommate and that sexual orientation was largely a non-issue.
