In my work, I am using digital animation to represent the intangible world of the memories embedded in objects and environments. My role, as the designer and animator, is that of visual interpreter. Light, color, geometry and time are designed in a way to make visible the stories that objects and environments hold. Through the interpretation process the memory is transferred to a new medium. It loses some of its previous context, but gains a new interpretation that adds to the object or environment’s richness. This paper documents the process of translating memory-based and historic stories into object-driven narratives from a design perspective. Portfolio projects are reviewed as applied studies of the translation process, including contextual research processes that influence the story building aspects of the productions. Researchers Gaston Bachelard and Sherry Turkle’s work provides a grounding for theories in object-driven narrative and spatial narrative. The conceptual and technical development of the thesis project “Remembrance” details ways in which the designer takes the viewer on a spatial and temporal journey tying the physical object to the virtual memory. The conclusion reflects on the designer’s role as researcher, writer, translator, and animator. “Remembrance” is examined with a critical eye for improvement and expansion of the idea of object-driven narrative. 2019-08-26 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1555606495788712 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1555606495788712 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
