The overarching goal of the present research is to provide a more thorough understanding of college students’ sense of belonging and its relations to their persistence and educational and career choices in STEM fields. In particular, the present research is also intended to provide insights into the underlying mechanisms that explain how sense of belonging is related to persistence and choices in STEM fields.Chapter Two presents a comprehensive literature review of the current knowledge about college students’ sense of belonging, achievement motivation, and persistence in STEM disciplines, using expectancy-value theory as a guiding framework. In addition, Chapter Two provides empirical evidence indicating the roles of expectancy beliefs and task values in the relation between sense of belonging and persistence. Knowledge gained through a review of the literature guided two empirical studies.Chapter Three consists of the first empirical study that investigated sense of belonging and its specificity, relative importance, and relations to achievement motivation and persistence in STEM fields. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the factor structure of sense of belonging and the relations between sense of belonging, achievement motivation, and persistence in STEM disciplines. In addition, potential gender differences in sense of belonging were explored using multi-group structural equation modeling. Chapter Four consists of the second empirical study. Using a longitudinal research design, this study described the direction of the relation between sense of belonging and achievement motivation over one semester. Autoregressive cross-lagged models were adopted to examine the mediating role of achievement motivation in the relation between sense of belonging and STEM career aspirations. Each of the chapters contributes individually to the overarching goal of this dissertation and advances the understanding of college students’ sense of belonging and its importance in their persistence in STEM fields. Findings altogether inform that developing a strong sense of belonging may serve as a key buffer against switching out from STEM degree programs and ultimately lead to STEM career choices. 2019-06-17 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1555524009765307 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1555524009765307 restricted--full text unavailable until 2024-05-06 This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
