This study also explored the social supports related to creative ability; how Arab Americans currently use creativity to cope with discrimination and how they see their efforts as changing negative perceptions of Arab Americans. Self-perceived creativity was measured by using the Kaufman Domains Creativity Scale (Kaufman, 2012). Ethnic identity was measured by using the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (Roberts, et. al., 1999). Discrimination was measured by using the Perceived Ethnic Discrimination Questionnaire-Community Version (Brondolo et. al., 2005). The sample comprised of 103 participants who self-identified as Arab American and were 18 years and older. Three focus group sessions were conducted that consisted of 13 participants. Results indicated that Arab Americans have a positive overall self-perceived ethnic identity and creativity. However, participants experienced racism or ethnic discrimination at least occasionally over their lifetime. In order to examine how Arab Americans cope with discrimination, the focus groups revealed that Arab Americans cope with stress and negative experiences through the use of creative expression and through seeking out information of their ethnic identity and participating in activities related to their ethnic identity. Implications of these results are discussed, as well as strategies for how to promote and include the arts in support of the well-being of students of all diverse backgrounds. 2018-07-27 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1524072265195156 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1524072265195156 restricted--full text unavailable until 2023-05-07 This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
