Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that is an important mediator of inflammation throughout the body.5-8 MIF polymorphisms, specifically –794 CATT repeat (rs5844572) and –173 G/C promoter (rs755622), lead to an increased expression of MIF and have been linked with disease severity in a multitude of systemic diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)9, rheumatoid arthritis (RA)10-12, juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)13, sarcoidosis14, scleroderma15, and spinal cord injury, among others. MIF vitreous levels are shown to be elevated in the vitreous and subretinal fluid of patients with PVR.16,17 Our research aims to determine if the presence of specific MIF promoter polymorphisms leads to an increased risk of PVR development or ERM formation. 2018-08-15 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1523296832882977 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1523296832882977 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
