Ornamental crops are sold for their aesthetic value, so growers have a very low disease threshold, which quickly creates a dependency on chemical usage. Overusing chemicals can lead to fungicide resistance in common greenhouse pathogens. An effective solution is to integrate biological control products into plant disease management strategies to reduce overusing of synthetic chemicals. In this study, a collection of 45 Pseudomonas bacteria are screened using in vitro and in planta assays in order to identify candidates for scaling-up to commercial use. In in vitro assays, seven common greenhouse pathogens were placed directly in contact with the 45 Pseudomonas bacteria in order to quantify inhibition. Pythium cryptoirregulare and Rhizoctonia solani were chosen from these studies to be tested further in planta under three different fertilizer regimens (.5X, 1X, and 1.5X nitrogen). P. chlororaphis 48G9 and P. brassicacearum Delaware were among those that showed potential for successful disease suppression; however, further testing under various environmental stresses need to be done. 2017 English text The Ohio State University / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1503063395390704 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=osu1503063395390704 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
